Settlement Teams

Update: Seeing the Good That You Do – Helping Newcomers

Settlement Teams work with the Diocese in the support of refugees to Canada. Since 2016, teams have been working with two Syrian families and three young men from Eritrea. In each case, there are roles to be performed in finding and setting up housing, assisting them regarding shopping, transportation, finances and medical appointments and introducing them to the Fredericton community.

In Autumn 2022, in cooperation with Hanwell Community and St. James Presbyterian churches, the Parish collected furnishings to help a Ukrainian family move into their own house.

In early 2023, the Parish raised money and formed a team to assist an Eritrean family to move to Fredericton. The application has been sent to IRCC (Immigration Canada). The family had been living in Khartoum, Sudan.
They have moved to Kampala, Uganda to avoid the violence that broke out in Sudan in Spring 2023 while they await the processing of their application.

Most recently, an application was submitted on behalf of 4 young Sudanis who are living in Saudi Arabia. Although their parents both died quite recently, they have family who are long-established in Fredericton and who will be doing most of the settlement work, with the support of a small team from St. Kateri.
